Channel 4’s ‘Educating Cardiff’ high school becomes ABC Awards Showcase Centre
Our Chief Executive, Paul Eeles, visited Willows High School in Cardiff last week, to present them with their Showcase Centre Award. The school is well known from its appearance on the popular Channel 4 documentary, Educating Cardiff, which captured every detail of what life is like for the students and staff.
The school is considered to be in one of the most deprived districts of Cardiff, with 48% of their children on free school meals, with a further possible 15-10% who might be eligible. The school is a stone’s throw away from the bustling Cardiff Bay development, yet the young people at Willows High School, because of their backgrounds, do not have much aspiration to strive for such opportunities in local industry jobs.
Since 2015, the school has delivered the ABC Awards Level 2 Art, Design and Creative Studies qualification for their Year 9 students. This has enabled the school to connect their leavers into the industries and jobs that are on their door step.
Commenting on his visit, Paul Eeles said:
“Since delivering this qualification they have reduced their young people not in education, employment or training from 15% to 0% in a couple of years, which is a fantastic achievement for the school and a positive outcome for the learners.”
Seeing Willows High School become an ABC Awards Showcase Centre is exactly the kind of recognition the school needs in order to inspire and motivate its learners and staff. Setting standards, goals and aspirations are bound to have a knock on effect to get their learners feeling ready to enter employment or training after school.
Willows High School could not be any more appreciative of the support they have received from our team at ABC Awards:
“We cannot express highly enough how impressed we are with the support we have received from everyone at ABC Awards. From becoming a Centre, to working with us to get the qualifications recognised with the Welsh Government, it’s all been great!”
