Working together with KTL to help to improve the lives of vulnerable young people through qualifications

Key Training and Learning (KTL) Ltd is a specialist training provider based in Nottingham who have been delivering apprenticeships, Certificates and Diplomas, centring on fashion and textiles, for the past 20 years.

In mid-2014, KTL became involved in an innovative project called Brand Recovery based in Derby. Brand Recovery aimed to create strong local links between support programmes (drugs and alcohol treatment, probation service and mental health services) and education, training and employers.

KTL chose ABC Awards Level 1 qualifications in Fashion & Textiles and Employability Skills to complement learners’ 6 week long support programme.

Since then, the results have surpassed expectations.

Tracy Martin, Chief Executive of KTL Ltd, said:

“The impact of ABC Awards qualifications has been remarkable. Learners are not only gaining new skills but have found the skills to be therapeutic to their condition with many taking to sewing and making garments at home beyond the course duration.”

Learners have gained new skills, overcome social isolation and boredom, developed daily structures and routines, made new friendships and found their conditions improved from doing the course.

A Brand Recovery learner commented:

“My cares just washed away. I’ve learnt new skills and got into a healthy routine. My mental health has improved lots and I now sew at home as it helps keep me in a good place.”

For many learners, the programme has also provided a route out of long-term unemployment, now undertaking full-time work or continuing their studies by undertaking an ABC Awards Level 2 qualification with KTL.

Collaborative working arrangements now exist with key partners, enabling them to rapidly refer learners to complement their treatment programmes. Brand Recovery has also formed a Social Enterprise.

KTL Ltd is an ABC Awards Showcase Centre for Fashion and Textiles.
